Party Dresses 1

The Last of the Victorian

Origin: During this time period,1900-1910, people stuck to the classical ideas. This could be seen through the clothes that they wore. Many of their clothes were based off of Queen Victoria. For centuries people have based off what they wore by the Queen. You can clearly see it with the dresses that the women wore. During this time women had to be very conservative, and if they weren't they were looked down upon.
Purpose: Long and very modest was the style of this decade. Queen Victoria, as said before, was the model for this time period. Queen Victoria created a trend of long sleeve dresses that had long trains. Modesty was the best policy during that time. Showing ankles during that time was a disgrace, and that's why they had very long dresses. The sleeves for the most part were also long, or 1/4 sleeve. The colors that were present in the dresses were more of a subtle pastel color. Having bright colors wasn't part of the Victorian style so it wasn't very common. The dresses ranged from casual to formal, like the one shown below. Casual dresses would be worn mostly for when you are in the house. The formal would be more for big events like weddings and parties.
Value: This piece expressed conservatism with women. Women were forced under these standards and unable to express themselves. They always had been inferior to society and showed how they still had to follow this old style that has been here for ages. This style of dress has started to get old and soon it will come to a change. The women that didn't support the liberation of women saw this as an appropriate style of dresses with the excess amount of modesty.
Limitations: The item shown below cannot tell us about the events that were occurring during this time. Not only that but you can't really tell the style of what men wore, but you can assume it was based off of the same style, Victorian. During this time many people stuck to the classical ideas, but there were people who wanted change. Women during this time were fighting for rights because for a very long time people were following the Victorian idea where women were seen as inferior. This item was mainstream for this time due to the fact that people only accepted the style Queen Victoria.

  2. Very good! Like the detail! Your overarching description of each decades clothing mixed with a picture example of a specific sample really helps not only visualize the clothing but also helps easily show a contrast between each decade. Good OPVL Evaluations. Be a little more distinct when talking about the limitations. Here you say limitations and then say "but" and add something positive that could be put under value, then say "but" again and go back to what should really be under limitations. Try to keep those two sections apart through putting the positives in the value and putting the negatives in limitations.

    Overall: Good job!

  4. This is really great! My only suggestion would be to focus more on the actual piece you are talking about rather than on the whole of fashion during each respective time period. Overall, it looks fab. :D
